Changelog
What's new in PulpPDF. Latest updates, features, and improvements for the offline PDF compressor.
Version 1.3.0
Improved
- Brand wordmark in About and Welcome screens — the "PulpPDF" name now renders in the dedicated logo font that matches this website, for a more cohesive look across the app and the marketing site
- Clearer build info on macOS — the About panel now distinguishes Universal builds from single-architecture builds (e.g.
Universal (arm64)vs justarm64), so it's easier to tell which build you're running when filing a bug report
Fixed
- Cancel button on the deactivate-license modal looked washed-out and broken in both light and dark mode because it was picking up OS-level system colors that didn't sit well inside the themed modal — now uses a proper outlined pill that reads correctly in both themes
- Windows error reporting was silently disabled on signed Windows builds because the reporting token was stripped at build time — Windows-specific issues now reliably reach us so we can actually fix them
Version 1.2.0
New
- Guided tour — the first time you load a PDF, a quick walkthrough explains the compression presets, OCR, Force Grayscale, and the Compress button so you know what every option does. Right-click → "Show Guide" to replay it any time
- Tooltips on Home, Settings, and About buttons so you always know what each one does
- Free edition hint — click the title bar text (free edition only) to see a quick note about when a commercial license is needed
- Windows: clicking the app icon in the title bar opens the right-click context menu
Improved
- Resizable window — you can now shrink the main window vertically for compact layouts and split-screen setups
- Reliable focus on launch — the main window consistently grabs keyboard focus when the app opens, including when launched from a file association or while another app is in front
Version 1.1.0
New
- Auto-grayscale detection — images that are already black & white are automatically stored in a single channel, cutting their size by up to 3× with zero visible loss
- Force grayscale toggle — new option next to OCR to convert all images to B&W for maximum compression
- JPEG 2000 support — PDFs from InDesign and Photoshop that use JPEG 2000 images are now properly compressed instead of being silently skipped
- "Most Likely Optimized" indicator — a sparkle badge appears when a file looks already well-compressed, so you know not to expect miracles
- Settings summary on the result screen — after compression you can see exactly which preset, DPI, OCR, and grayscale settings were used
- Notices & Acknowledgements — a new in-app page listing every open-source project PulpPDF is built on, with full license texts
Improved
- Redesigned preset selector — compact chip-row instead of a long radio list, with a description card that updates as you pick
- Encrypted PDF handling — password-protected files now show a padlock badge and a clear message instead of crashing mid-compression
- Smoother UI experience — polished tooltips, panel behavior, filename display, and first-launch flow so everything feels more intuitive
Fixed
- Compression result screen showed a negative percentage as a success when the output file was actually larger
- License banner kept reappearing after every restart even after dismissing it
- "Open File" button failed on some systems with a glob pattern error
- OCR preference could silently reset when changing unrelated settings
- Some images in PDFs were skipped during compression due to unsupported color spaces or encoding — now handled correctly
